A Note from Jim

Some of you may remember a video I showed in prayer meeting several months ago … it was entitled "Dust"...and featured a young man named Rob Bell. Rob is the pastor of a growing church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The video segment was part of a series called "Nooma"...taken from the Greek word "pneuma" that means "spirit" and is often used in reference to the Holy Spirit.

I mention this video because the subject of "Dust" was the concept of discipleship. Discipleship is a word that most of us use easily within the church body...but it is a word that many of us have difficulty defining. Rob's definition is one of the most concise and effective I've ever seen: A disciple is one who "believes what the master believes so he can do what the master does." This was what Jewish Rabbi's understood to be the task of their followers...and a definition that the people of Jesus' time would have understood.

In the case of those who followed the great Rabbis, only the "best of the best" students of the Scripture were chosen to be disciples. But in Jesus' case, He chose men that we're not recognized students of the Scripture...men that the Jewish leaders saw to be "uneducated an untrained." (Acts 4:13) These were men that did not fit the mold of what great religious leaders should be. But, as we see in the Bible, Jesus trained these men to be world changers...men who would continue the work Jesus began...our forefathers in the faith, so to speak.

Discipleship then is not about simply gaining knowledge...it is also about letting that knowledge impact how you live...passing on the faith as well as experiencing it for ourselves. Jesus chastised the Jewish leadership because they guarded the truth from "outsiders"...Jesus took it to “outsiders."

We become most like Jesus when we do what Jesus did. You and I are God's chosen instruments to reach a lost world. What we believe is crucial...but what we do about what we believe is what makes us disciples.

May the Lord bless you as you become more like Him.
"For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:6, NASU

Together in Him,
Jim

Women's Ministry

Women's NightWatch Bible Study
Are you loving well? We all deal with people who are a joy to love and those who are more difficult to love. Come join us in the COC Conference Room for four-weeks of Bible study beginning Thursday, July 19 at 6 pm. Let’s enjoy fun and fellowship with other women, laugh our heads off, shed a few tears, make new friends, and enjoy old friends as we all learn how to love well.

Through video we will hear four heart-to-heart messages from best-selling author and teacher Beth Moore. Taped at a Living Proof Live event, Beth describes different types of people — some easy to love, and some not so easy to love. These messages include hard-hitting truths as well as humor, all designed to help women embrace the Biblical mandate to love and to develop skills for loving others.

There will be no charge for the Bible study; however there is an optional 28-day journal that may be used as part of the 4-week study or as follow up for personal Bible study. The cost of the Journal is $6.00 and will be available for purchase on July 19. Please contact Nancy Rogers in the church office at 270-442-6038 x 210 to indicate your interest in participating and whether or not you would like for us to reserve you a copy of the Journal.

Thank You Notes

Dear First Family,
I would like to publicly thank everyone that helped with Vacation Bible School this year, especially those that joyfully helped with the K-5 arts and crafts! I was elated to have such wonderful help this year and it sure did make the days flow smoothly with approximately 180 children in an hour and a half each day! It takes many days and countless hours to prepare and clean up and my assistants were always there to help with huge smiles on their faces. Each of you was a true example of Friday’s lesson of having a servant’s heart! Thank you for all of your time and help.
With God’s love,
Ladona Little

Dear FBC family:
I want to personally thank all the kind volunteers who brought food for our teacher's lounge during Vacation Bible School. Each tasty item was greatly needed and appreciated. We are blessed to have such a loving church family. The teachers worked very hard; and thanks to your generous donations, always had a nice snack. Thanks again for taking time out of your day to serve. May God bless you and your families.
Blessings,
Heather Farris

Thanks for the many cards of support during my stay in the hospital. Your prayers helped me get through a difficult time and they are still helping today.
Sincerely,
Frank Young

I would like to thank the middle schoolers who recently attended Kentucky Changers camp. It was an honor to watch these youth work hard to benefit those who are less fortunate. I was uplifted and moved to watch them worship our Lord and see God mature them in their spiritual walk. Please seek out these young people and ask how God changed them during this experience.
In Him,
Brian Carter

Thank you for the visits, cards, and most of all for your prayers during and after my recent stay in the hospital. Please continue to remember Bobbie and me in your prayers.
Thank you,
Jesse Horton and Bobbie Horton
