Our Great God

Be swept away by the mystery...the majesty..the vastness...the greatness of God. Sunday Mornings at 9:00am or 11:10am.
Sunday Nights at 6:00pm.
Wednesday Nights at 6:00pm.

From the Pastor

Few things have characterized our culture's confusion over the subject of truth more than the controversy which surrounded James Frey's "memoir," A Million Little Pieces. After the book's publication and selection into Oprah Winfrey's book club, Frey's summary of his own experience of quitting drugs and alcohol was found to be heavily sprinkled with fabrications and lies.

Rightfully so, controversy erupted.

After appearing on Larry King Live where he denied lying, The New York Times reported a month later that Frey was claiming that there were indeed fabrications and that those fabrications actually served to improve his book.

Really? I wonder if Frey's grandmother ever tried to teach him that two wrongs don't make a right.

Many in America today are using a newly-coined word, "truthy." "Truthy" designates something that is close to the truth, or somewhat true, but not in fact true.

In the midst of such a confusing culture, we Christians have an opportunity to be who God has called us to be-people of truth. As followers of Christ, we believe that Jesus is "the way, and the truth, and the life" (John 14:6) and that we can know the truth which will set us free. (John 8:32) Moreover, we understand that God's Word is truth. (John 17:17)

A quick survey of Paul's writings to Timothy will remind us of the priority of truth and teaching in the life of the church.

Timothy was commanded to stay in Ephesus and charge certain persons "not to teach any different doctrine."" (1 Timothy 1:3) Some persons who had swerved from the life of love, purity, goodness, and sincerity desired to "be teachers of the law"—something which was undoubtedly concerning. (1:6-7)

Paul stated that the law is for those things which are "contrary to sound doctrine."" (1:10) He stipulates that on overseer must be "able to teach" (3:2) and that the church is a "pillar and buttress of truth." (3:15)

Christians are called "those who believe and know the truth," (4:3) and a good servant of Christ Jesus is one who is "being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine."" (4:6)

Paul commands Timothy to "command and teach these things" (4:11) and that he should devote himself "to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching."" (4:13) He pointedly tells Timothy, "Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching." (4:16)

Church leaders "who labor in preaching and teaching" are to be esteemed. (5:17) Slaves are to honor their masters "so that the name of God and the teaching may not be reviled." (6:1)

Timothy is instructed to "Teach and urge these things." (6:1) He is also encouraged to understand that anyone who "teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness" is conceited and lacks understanding. (6:3)

In 2 Timothy, Paul describes God's call on his own life by saying that he "was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher." (1:11) He also tells Timothy to "follow the pattern of sound words" which he had heard from Paul. (1:13) In addition, he charges Timothy to take what he had learned from Paul and pass it along to men who would "be able to teach others also." (2:2)

Timothy is commanded to remember Jesus Christ "as preached in my gospel," and he is reminded that "the word of God is not bound!"(2:8-9) Timothy also receives the command to serve God, "rightly handling the word of truth," (2:15) and he is reminded again that the Lord's servant must be "able to teach." (2:24)

Paul warns Timothy that in the last days, there will be those who "oppose the truth." (3:8) While others will go from "bad to worse," Timothy is challenged to continue in what he has learned and firmly believed since his childhood when he became "acquainted with the sacred writings." (3:13-15)

The foundation, focus, and fabric of Timothy's ministry is highlighted when Paul says, "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work." (3:16-17)

Paul commands Timothy to "preach the word…for the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths." (4:3-4)

In wrapping up his letter, Paul warns Timothy of a man named "Alexander," for Alexander had strongly opposed Paul's message. (4:15)

The Bible is clear. Truth matters, and it should matter most to those who claim the name of Christ.

I don't want my boys to grow up and be "truthy." Amy and I expect nothing less than truthfulness.

May God bless us as we seek to know the truth and as we seek to continue walking in the truth—for the glory of our great God.

Revelation 22:21,

Todd Brady
Pastor

Thank You Notes

A special thanks to all my workers and to the many blood donors that participated in our third annual blood drive at First Baptist Church. We accomplished our goal and that is so rewarding to know that we had a small part in reaching out into our community in such a worthy cause. Thanks again and God bless each of you. See you in February 2008!
Blessings,
Marie Jackson

Dear Ones,
Our sweet Savior has given us peace and hope during our unexpected loss of Eric's mother. Our hearts are so full of praise to the Lord for the love expressed for our family by all of you. Your faithful prayers, kind words and cards have encouraged us. We are so blessed to serve along side such sweet Christian friends. Thank you, church family, for all your love!
Prayerfully,
The Milles Family

We would like to thank all the people who sent cards, made phone calls, and came to see Jim while he was in the hospital. We want to especially thank the staff for their visits and prayers. Without all the prayers we both would not be doing as well as we are. Thanks to a kind and loving church.
Jim and Carolyn Adams

A special thank you to everyone at First Baptist Church for all the prayers, cards, and visits while I was in the hospital. You have a wonderful hospital visitation team and we certainly appreciated it.
Paul and Joyce Harp

Dear Church Family,
Your many kindnesses to us these past months have been a great comfort to our family. Thank you for the many visits to the hospital, your prayers, & every other gesture of love shown us. The flowers from the church for the funeral were beautiful. Thank you for this lovely expression of concern and sympathy. Our entire family joins us in expressing our appreciation.
Sincerely,
Dottie, David, Toni, Michael, Allison & Andrew Stricklin and the Bill Stricklin family
